Hines Ward Vector by AngstromAlliance Hines Ward Vector by AngstromAlliance
As previously threatened... an American Football vector study of the one and only Hines Ward! (Go Stillers).

Usual methodology - dozens of layers of mesh, topped off with straight line work detailing, including the stitching (Edit, I used multiple gradient fills to add texture the ball). The main image was from picturtepush.com while the autograph was posted online by a grateful fan who had received it from the man himself. The background was taken from another image and rendered in B/W in order not to detract from the central study. Oh, and his name was done with the type tool.

Respect to FrankWyte81 whose rendition of Matt Ryan inspired me to try my hand at a gridiron piece.

Now that WOULD have been a surprise :D

No, I just tried a few different things, like the texturing of the ball, and was just pleased with the end result.

haven't got a grid iron piece and do not understand the methodology, but think this is a pretty darn good piece of digital art love the fluid movement in the piece even down to the right arm vein extendor...very smooth:iconcoolplz:

Thanks Nev, I've followed the Steelers from afar since I was a kid and thought it would be an interesting challenge to attempt this piece. I think having an interest in the subject matter gives that extra bit of inspiration.

Those are probably the finest words any designer could wish to hear... other than "I'll give you $10,000,000 for that picture :)

I started vectoring because other artists made a real impression on me, so it's great to know I've inspired you. Thankyou.

You demonstrate an amazing ability to render different materials (i.e. football, clothing...) and skin using vectors. This must have taken an incredible amount of time to plan to get the desired result. Very well done!

Thanks WH for the kind comment. High res source images help so you can really get a feel for the various tones and textures. It's then a case of trying different methods to best represent them. The ball took some real thinking about to try and replicate the dimpled texture. I'm glad the end result meets your approval.

It still surprises me how convincing a whole pile of gradient meshes can look. It seemed appropriate to pay homage to Hines after his years of fantastic service to the Steelers.

This looks great man. Your work is great and this is very impressive. Way better than the one I created. How did you get that texture on the football?

That's praise from on high and very kind of you to say so, Frank.

The ball texture took some working out and in the end I did it by creating each bobble individually, using a circle filled with a gradient going from 100% black to 0% black with a white radial filled highlight positioned at the top. These were then positioned on top of the pre-coloured ball and their transparency adjusted until I got the desired look. It took ages but I was pleased with the finished effect.

I am still flabergasted at what can be achieved by using nothing but gradient meshes and line work.
