The Maculate Complexion by AngstromAlliance The Maculate Complexion by AngstromAlliance
Sometimes, inspiration just leaps out and smacks you in the chops. Whilst still reeling from Frank's 'Freckles', I saw a deviation of the photo version of this image denuded, by a process of filters, of it's lentiginous qualities. I decided to go the other way and attempt to capture the original in all her beautiful bespeckled glory.

Countless hours later and with prodigious use of Illustrator CS5's gradient mesh tool and the trusty Wacom tablet and pen, you see the finished result. Everything is built from meshes with hair and textural accents added using the brush tool.

The wireframe can be seen here: [link]

It is a pleasure. I would have written more, if I knew what to write. But that single word hits it very well and precisely in all its meanings. I cannot spontaneously recall vector graphics with that realistic appearance.

I think you summed up your feelings on the matter perfectly. There's some stunning photo-realistic vectoring in the DA community. Seeing what others have achieved using this medium is what made inspired me to give it a try.

Indeed. I tried, too, but either because I just use different tools (I have my problems with Adobe), do not invest enough time or simply am not capable enough I have not achieved yet something in vector graphics, which can be described as "photorealism", even though I like to fiddle with vector graphics. I love vector graphics.

Time and practice are definitely key factors when you decide to take on complex vectoring involving meshes.

So amazing... she looks real. Only the ear is a little awkward in color. May need a little shading or something. But Awesome!!!

Thanks for taking the time to comment, Lydia. If you look at the hair on the right and side. you can see how the original photo was taken with a narrow depth of field, focused on the nose and face with the background dropping out. What I've drawn of the ear is a close match, though I can see why you think it looks a tad awkward.

Just amazed. The color transitions are nice and smooth. The eyes just pop off the image. The only thing is just personal preference, wouldn't of put freckles over her lips.

Cheers Jason, it did take a lot of time and effort to achieve the end result. I can't access the original image at the moment, but I'm pretty certain she has actually got freckles on her lips and I just tried to reproduce what nature had created :)

I so love freckles; looked then realised its a drawing! intense work! ...I saw the mesh, how do you create the textures? (I'm not familiar with how vector drawings are created in practice... `¬)

Thanks Martin. The texture is a result of how you blend and use the colours. The tighter the mesh you create (the closer the connecting points), the more depth you can add to the feel of what you are drawing. This also helps in defining if things have hard or soft edges, which is important when trying to mimic reality.
